Books that keep themselves, for one person

You are not behind on your bookkeeping because it is hard. You are behind because it is forty small decisions a month and none of them are the work you get paid for.

What the month looks like

Once, at the end of the month: export the statement from your bank, hand it over, answer two or three questions about the things that were genuinely ambiguous. That is the job.

Everything else — matching the payment to the invoice, opening the account for a category you have not used before, keeping the currency straight on the one client who pays in euros — happens without you.

Why the books end up better, not just faster

A spreadsheet lets you write anything. A ledger does not. Every entry has to balance before it is committed, so the failure mode people actually have with DIY bookkeeping — a number typed in one place and not the other — cannot happen here.

And because it is a real ledger rather than a list, the questions you could never answer from a spreadsheet become one sentence: what did I actually earn last quarter, what is still owed to me, what did I spend on software this year.

What you would notice on day one

• Nothing to install if you use the agent in chat. There is a plugin for Claude if you prefer that, and an API if you are the kind of freelancer who would.
• No card for the free book, and it does not expire into a worse version of itself.
• Your accountant can read it. Exports go out as a spreadsheet they already know how to open, so nobody has to learn Beancount to do your taxes.

What it does not do

It does not file anything. There is no payroll, no tax return, no VAT submission — Countbean keeps the books of record and hands your accountant clean data. If you were hoping to replace the accountant, this is not that, and we would rather say so on this page than in an email later.
